What motivates you and how would you inspire other females to pursue engineering?
In recognition of National Engineers Week, DE has posed questions to our engineering staff about their profession and the impact, lessons learned, and personal fulfillment it entails.
Today's Q&A features Christina Shurley, P.E. who has been at DE for five years practicing civil engineering along the Gulf Coast for design of flood protection, roadway, utilities, as well as stormwater management.
Q: The national average of females in the engineering workforce is 15%. As a female in this profession, what motivates you and how would you inspire other females to pursue engineering?
A: I was raised to always do my best, to never give up, and know that my goals were attainable if I pushed myself and was willing to put in the hard work. These values are what motivate me. I set the bar high, am confident that I can overcome a challenge, and never settle for anything but my best. I would tell a female, or male, pursuing engineering that hard work, confidence and taking pride in yourself and your work will lead you down a successful path, both professionally and personally.
