The West 8th Avenue Corridor is a heavy volume local road that provides direct access to St. Paul’s High School, St. Tammany Parish Hospital, and several other area schools. St. Tammany Parish Hospital generates pedestrian traffic and a fatality occurred there in February 2018. DE was retained to help mitigate vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle conflicts.

DE provided an analysis and evaluation of the current and potential traffic volume and safety issues along the West 8th Avenue Corridor from LA 21/South Tyler Street to South Van Buren Street. DE proposed recommendations to the City of Covington. Click Here to learn more about this analysis, evaluation and proposed recommendations.

The City of Covington then hired DE to implement the safety modifications recommended in the Traffic Study. The scope of the project included the design of traffic calming features along the West 8th Avenue corridor and at the intersection of West 8th Avenue at South Harrison Street. The project challenges were making sure to design this small area to be able to encompass heavy vehicles that may make trips in the area to and from the Hospital.
